How to Choose a Frame Based on Your Face Shape

Different frame shapes suit different face shapes. Do you know what frames you look best in?

Round Face Shape

Round faces are generally easy to spot with having smooth lines and no sharp angles throughout the face. A round face shape will be equally wide at the forehead and jawline, with the cheekbones being the widest feature on the face.

To enhance round face features, try rectangular frames to sharpen your face making it look slimmer and longer. Fun and vibrant colors will also add some contrast to your face to compliment your appearance.

Oval Face Shape

Those with oval faces have naturally soft curves with slightly more narrow forehead and chin, while the cheekbones are slightly wider and higher.

Known for having naturally balanced proportions, almost any frames work for this face shape. Avoid overly large or narrow frames to maintain the natural balance of your face. Otherwise, rectangular, square, wayfarer, round, aviator frames all look good! Try a bold color or funky print for an extra pop to your style.

Square Face Shape

A square face shape is typically defined by its sharp lines and strong angular features. Those with this face shape are usually described as having an equally wide forehead, cheekbones and jawline, where a straight line can be drawn from the forehead to the cheekbones, down to the jaw.

To soften the strong features of a square face, try some round or oval frames to add curves and contrast to your face. Choosing frames that are more wide than they are long will also add the illusion of lengthening your face. Rimless and half-rim frames will also soften and tone down the sharp lines.

Heart Face Shape

Just like its name, heart face shapes are characterized by the wider forehead, high cheekbones, and a tapering down to a more narrow chin.

To complement a heart face shape, aim for frames that help minimize the top by choosing a frame that is wider than your forehead, such as aviators. Choosing rimless or light colored frames will also help soften any sharp lines and draw focus from your forehead to your eyes instead. If you have a pointy chin, oval shaped frames or frames with decorative stones will also redirect the attention from your chin to your eyes.

Diamond Face Shape

A rare but beautiful face shape, the diamond face shape is known for its high and prominent cheekbones. It also has the appearance of a narrow forehead and narrow chin with straight lines pointing direct towards the cheekbones

Depending on what facial feature you want to draw attention to, diamond face shapes have a lot of options to play around with. Cat-eye frames will do wonders to emphasize your sharp cheekbones, whereas wider frames will cover the cheekbones and bring more of a balance to your face. To draw attention away from your pointy chin and instead focus on your eyes, aim for rimless frames or half rim frames with a top heavy design. Try to avoid more narrow frames, as this will make your eye area appear smaller as well.
